Everyone knows that homes need smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. But do you know where to install the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms? Here’s a quick guide.
Where to install Smoke Alarms (Section 314.3 of California Building Code)
- In each sleeping room
- Outside each separate sleeping area (a.k.a. bedroom hallways)
- On each floor, including basements and habitable attics
Where NOT to install Smoke Alarms
- Ionization Smoke Alarms: Less than 20 feet from kitchen
- Photoelectric Smoke Alarms: Less than 6 feet from kitchen

- Outside each separate sleeping area (a.k.a. bedroom hallways)
- For additional safety, we recommend Carbon Monoxide Alarms also be install on each floor.
